Stephen Harper's -view on- Libraries

Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the Govt of Canada and the city of Toronto will work together to fight the recession, create jobs and improve infrastructure by making improvements to the Toronto Reference Library.
" For decades the Toronto Reference Library has been an important resource for millions of visitors of all ages"

Digital technology is transforming how we access and use information. The vessels that have traditionally prreserved knowledge are changing. Yet, the importance of our libraries as physical places where people gather to learn hasn't diminished.
He also stated - much has changed, however, since I first came to this library as a student in 1977. To meet these challenges an ambitious revitalization effort is needed. Or as any librarian here might put it, renovations to the reference Library are long overdue. We must stay on course, complete the implementationof our plan and finish the job of building the foundations of Canada's future prosperity.

GOOGLE BOOKS

Google has been scanning millions of books under US copyright since 2004.Google is in the final stages of reaching a settlement with two US copyright organisations. According to a rough estimate from CWWCS, nearly 18,000 books from 570 Chinese writers have been scanned by Google and included in its digital library. Google Books is planning to turn millions of books into electronic literature available online
“Google’s infringement of Chinese authors is very severe,” - Zhang Hongbo.
However, Google Books is facing big legal problems in the United States, Europe and elsewhere around the globe over the issue of copyrights. — Bernama
According to the settlement, if the author rejects Google’s right to scan, he or she should appeal before Jan 5, 2010. Authors should approach Google authorising the scanning and get the compensation before June 5, 2010. STORY BEHIND H1N1 VACCINE

Fear over the H1N1 virus spreading the globe is every body aware, even suggested that the swine flu virus is not as deadly as initially feared. Now it has become necessity taking steps to produce vaccine.
WHO now termed it as “unstoppable
Normally, it takes about 25 weeks for a new influenza virus to cover the globe. But H1N1 reached all continents within 9 weeks.
“ The flu transmission did not stop even after the hot summer / temperature raises, and studies also indicating that “ PEOPLE BORN AFTER 1975 WERE MORE VULNERABLE DUE TO INABILITY OF IMMUNE SYSTEM
When we eye on more details on vaccine preparation, the technology includes “ CELL CULTURE BASED and EGG CULTURED BASED" technology to create an H1V1 Vaccine.

The first step for in the vaccine production is the making of the “seed” virus. It has been prepared from Mexico and California H1N1 strains.
This seed virus is supplied to vaccine manufacturers which were chosen by WHO. In our India Pune based Serum Institute of India taken the responsibility of preparation of vaccine with crack team of 16 scientists.
The seed viruses from various strains are then prepared to be ready for vaccine production by a process called “assortment”.
These assorted viruses are then injected into specially prepared pathogen – free, fertile chicken eggs. The safe virus grows inside the eggs for 4-6 weeks time.
Then viruses are extracted from the eggs, purified and inactivated and then formulated into a vaccine
The normal dosage of influenza vaccine is 15mg. From each chicken egg, one dose of influenza vaccine is produced. Some times two eggs my be required to produce each dose.
India’s largest poultry maker Venkateshwara Hatcheries currently supplying 100,000 pathogen-free eggs. But in urgent requirement they will be able to supply up to 2.5 million eggs in a month.
Lets hope Serum institute should develop an influenza vaccine in the shortest possible time and make safe millions of global citizens. (source: Tech. Rev. Aug 2009………………..)

SCAN WITHOUT SCANNER ??? ! ! ! ...

Dear Professionals, can you imagine scan a document without a scanner? You may not believe, Yes you can… now, with the help of your digital Camera? Still you not believe. Let us see how? Till now we are utilizing our Digital camera for taking photographs and some other purpose. Other than taking photos you can also scan your documents, photographs, Books, White and Black boards, your visiting cards, what ever the image you have in your digital camera. All you need it one software i.e. Snapter, is a software that will help you use a digital camera as a mobile scanner. This software automatically crops, stretches, flattens, and converts photos of documents, whiteboards, posters, business cards and receipts into more portable images. Wherever you are, either in Conference, Class room or in Library just take a snap and run it through the Snapter, images looks like as been scanned through the flat bed scanner.
Software free versions also available. But for the first 14 days it will work. After that also it will work in functional, but it will add light watermark on your images. If it is not good enough for your documents, then you have to buy software. Visit
http://www.atiz.com/buy/ . Free version is also good enough for you. Now let me ask is it believable? or not? Now you imagine when you are in friends house, if you find any book or magazine wishing to scan it and save it for later. On the spot, is it possible to bring any scanner and make scan? It is not. Take out your digital camera or your digital mobile wave it and run the image through the OCR Software and save it. To down load visit http://snapter.atiz.com/ .
Enjoy the images.
Thank you.

UGC JRF = entry-level IAS

UGC decided to increase the scholarship amount for JRF by 35 to 40%.
Now researchers get money almost equivalent to basic pay of Rs 20,800 per month — of entry-level Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officials and assistant professors.

UGC also decided to hike scholarships for women pursuing post-doctoral fellowship by about four times.
Now women without research experience will get Rs 25,000 (which was Rs 6,000 earlier) while those with experience will get Rs 30,000 per month as against Rs 8,000 earlier.
The commission, earlier this month, decided that junior research scholars will now get Rs 16,000 per month (Rs 12,000 earlier) for first two years and Rs 20,000 (Rs 14,000 earlier) for the next three years.
The physically challenged researchers will get an escort allowance of Rs 2,000 per month along with the scholarship.“The scholarship amount has been enhanced so that scholars don’t leave mid-day to join teaching,” UGC chairperson Sukhdeo Thorat said.
The new amount of scholorship to be available to 6,500 researchers every year (doubled as compared to last year) — will be applicable from the new academic year 2009-10.
Only students who have cleared the National Eligibility Test will be eligible for the scholarships. The proposal to enhance the scholarship was taken after a recommendation by RP Aggarwal, Higher Education Secretary in the HRD ministry. “The fellowship amount should be increased to 50 per cent subject to the condition that it is less than initial pay for a fresh appointee as assistant professor,” Aggarwal had told UGC in letter on July 30.
With this, the UGC is looking to meet the demand for faculty with requisite research credentials and PhD degrees.
